This picture exerts a very powerful impression in a dimension additional to the sexual. The surrealist idea of a compulsive image is actually that of the fabric hooked on a nail (or other extremely ‘opposite’ or functionally, materially contrasting item.) The confluence of the soft, billowy, mobile, new, feminine and relatively transient red material, with the hard, immobile, rigid, old, masculine (made by men who are now absent) and relatively permanent grey/white material (symbol of age and death, as well as the superficially phallic). A minute or two after seeing this picture, I semi unconsciously double-checked my surroundings: something on the computer, my own desk, my clothes, something felt “out”. I was looking for something wrong in any number of other metaphorical and physical ways. It seemed to represent the confusion of the day, or any days, of silly mistakes, of things overlooked. I am still impressed at the strength of that image, how it caught me off guard. So I resolve the issue, and symbolically rescue the maiden, by writing this solution to the dilemma.

I’ll try, Lauren. L-R: Tommy Steele (seated, UK 50s star); Vince Taylor (UK singer who became a big star in France, I gigged with him in the 70s); PJ Proby; Billy Fury (UK star who died young); Tommy Sands; Ricky Nelson (see him with John Wayne & Dean Martin in ‘Rio Bravo’); Elvis Presley; Tom Jones (originally a Welsh rocker who became a Vegas regular & friend of Elvis); Eddie Cochran (seated, red shirt, early R&R singer/songwriter); Terry Dene (UK 50s singer); Richie Valens (La Bamba) Cliff Richard (patting hair, originally a UK Elvis clone who ‘cleaned up’ & has had hits in every decade since the ’50s); – and I’m not sure, but maybe the one on the far right is Bobby Vee, who stepped in for Buddy Holly after the plane crash on the Winter Dance Party tour in 1959.
